Xiagu Zhong An Zu

Xiagu Zhong An Zu, known in English as The Summer Hikers, is a short-form original net animation produced by the Chinese studio Paper Plane Animation. Released in the early 2020s, the project emerged as part of a growing movement of independent Chinese animation that prioritizes atmospheric storytelling and visual artistry over traditional commercial tropes. The production was conceived as a meditation on youth, nature, and the transient quality of memory, utilizing a minimalist aesthetic that relies heavily on painterly backgrounds and a soft, muted color palette.

The animation was crafted to evoke a sense of contemplative nostalgia, deliberately avoiding complex dialogue in favor of environmental sound design and evocative pacing. Critics and audiences in the animation community received the work favorably, often highlighting its technical restraint and emotional sincerity. By focusing on the quiet, internal experiences of its characters against the backdrop of a vast, tranquil summer landscape, the creators sought to offer an introspective contrast to the high-energy mainstream titles typical of the contemporary digital animation space.
