Where it came from
Xenosaga: The Animation was produced by Toei Animation and aired in 2005, serving as a condensed adaptation of the 2002 role-playing game Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht. The series was created to capitalize on the popularity of the Monolith Soft franchise, attempting to distill the game's dense, Gnostic-inspired science fiction narrative into a twelve-episode television format.
The character designs for the anime were handled by Nobuteru Yuki, who adapted the original game designs from Kunihiko Tanaka. While the production aimed to bridge the gap for viewers unfamiliar with the complex source material, it received a mixed reception from fans and critics, who often felt that the narrative's philosophical depth was difficult to translate effectively into the shorter, episodic structure of a television series.
