Where it came from
Xiang Qi Wang, or 'King of Chinese Chess', was produced by Hong Ying Animation and released as a television series in the early 2000s. Developed in Taiwan, the show was created to modernize the traditional board game by infusing it with fantasy elements and action-oriented storytelling, aiming to capture the interest of a younger demographic through serialized animation.
The production sought to balance historical aesthetic influences with the dynamic visual language of early-2000s anime. By personifying the chess pieces as characters with unique martial arts abilities and magical powers, the design team aimed to bridge the gap between cultural heritage and contemporary entertainment. While it remains a niche title outside of its primary regional broadcast, it is recognized for its ambition to adapt a classic strategic game into a character-driven narrative.
