Xiangsi

Xiangsi, which translates to 'lovesickness' or 'yearning,' was produced by Dazzling Star and released in 2017 as part of the 'Chinese Mythological Short Film Project.' The project was established to revitalize traditional Chinese culture through modern animation techniques, seeking to bridge the gap between classical aesthetics and contemporary storytelling. By focusing on the evocative, subtle nature of traditional poetry, the studio aimed to capture the melancholy beauty of the Ming Dynasty.

The animation features a distinct ink-wash painting style that pays homage to traditional artistic techniques rather than mimicking Western digital norms. The creative team intentionally prioritized atmosphere and poetic cadence over high-octane action, a choice that garnered significant critical acclaim for its visual restraint. Upon its release, it was widely praised for its emotional depth and became a notable example of the burgeoning movement to represent Chinese cultural heritage in the digital age.
