Where it came from
Xiang Shi Chuanshuo, or The Legend of Xiangshi, was produced by the Chinese animation studio Boruntong and released as an original net animation. It emerged during a period of rapid expansion for the Chinese domestic animation industry, which sought to blend traditional cultural narratives with digital production techniques to reach younger audiences online.
The series focuses on folklore-inspired themes, utilizing a distinct animation style characteristic of Boruntong's output during the early 2010s. The studio aimed to create a visually accessible mythological epic, and while the production faced the technical constraints common to web-based animations of its era, it contributed to the growing catalogue of homegrown content on Chinese streaming platforms.
