Where it came from
Xiongshi Shaonian, released internationally as I Am What I Am, was produced by Yi Animation and directed by Sun Haipeng. The film emerged during a significant shift in Chinese animation, moving away from traditional mythological subjects to focus on grounded, contemporary realism. It was designed to highlight the cultural significance of the lion dance, a traditional art form, while exploring themes of perseverance, migration, and the struggles of youth in rural China.
The production is notable for its deliberate use of hyper-realistic 3D rendering and motion capture, aimed at creating a visceral experience of the lion dance's athleticism. While it received widespread critical acclaim for its technical artistry and emotional resonance, it also became the subject of intense social media debate upon its release regarding the character design, specifically the choice to animate the lead characters with slanted eyes, a stylistic decision the filmmakers defended as an attempt to capture authentic features.
