Synopsis

Sentan Island is a small island surrounded by the Yuden Sea. It exists in a state of dreamlike tranquility, cut off from the war between the Northern Government and the Southern Continent Free Zone. Our hero, Akiyuki Takehara, lives on Sentan Island along with his mother Fusa. He is currently separated from his father, the town doctor Ryuzo, but the bond between father and son remains. One day, after taking Ryuzo the lunch that Fusa has made for him as usual, Akiyuki arrives at school, where he is caught up in an explosion along with his friends, Haru and Furuichi. The explosion produces a mysterious light, which enters Akiyuki's arm, causing him excruciating pain. He's given no time to understand it, however, as the white-haired girl who rode on the bus with him guides him to a power unlike anything he's ever known.

Provenance

Where it came from

Xam'd: Lost Memories was produced by the acclaimed animation studio Bones and released in 2008 as one of the earliest high-profile examples of an original network animation, or ONA. Designed to leverage the emerging digital distribution landscape, the series was first released via the PlayStation Network before making its way to traditional television broadcasts. It was conceived as a sweeping, character-driven epic that explored themes of identity, war, and evolution, drawing frequent comparisons to the studio's earlier work on Eureka Seven.

The series was directed by Masayuki Miyaji, a protégé of Hayao Miyazaki who had previously worked on various Studio Ghibli projects. Miyaji aimed to create a visually dense and emotionally resonant narrative that felt distinct from the typical action-heavy anime of the era. Upon its release, it was lauded by critics for its ambitious world-building and painterly background art, though its complex, deliberate pacing made it a polarizing entry among audiences who were accustomed to more conventional storytelling structures.
