The future of the universe rests on one young man, Kamui Shirou, who must destroy either the Dragons of Earth or the Dragons of Heaven - two opposing armies. He alone must decide whether humanity should be destroyed to create a purified universe, or whether it should be protected to preserve civilization.
Two oracles, the sisters Hinoto and Kanoe foresee the coming of the Dragons and predict opposite outcomes. Each sister gathers strength and ammunition to insure her own vision for the future. However, neither sister realizes that there is one man who has an even greater power than the Dragons, and that ultimately he will determine the fate of the earth.
Which sister will prevail and how does Kamui fit into their struggle? The answer to this question will forever affect humanity.

Where it came from
Released in 1996, the X film was produced by the acclaimed animation studio Madhouse as a cinematic adaptation of the popular manga series by the artistic collective CLAMP. The project was intended to bring the apocalyptic, urban fantasy aesthetic of the source material to the big screen, centering on the battle for the future of humanity between the Dragons of Heaven and the Dragons of Earth. The film is noted for its high-budget, dark, and stylish animation that defined the visual language of late 1990s anime.
The character designs were handled by Nobuteru Yuki, who adapted CLAMP’s intricate and flowing style for animation. The film was directed by Rintaro, a veteran of the industry known for his atmospheric and moody visual storytelling. While the adaptation was praised for its technical prowess and iconic soundtrack by X Japan, it was also noted for its necessarily condensed narrative, which had to distill a sprawling, ongoing manga saga into a single feature-length experience.
