Where it came from
Released in 1982 by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, Xiyue Qi Tong, or 'The Seven-Colored Deer,' is a landmark work in the history of Chinese animation. Based on a mural from the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, the film was created to revitalize the aesthetic of traditional Chinese art within the medium of film. It was produced during a period of creative resurgence for the studio, which sought to blend moral storytelling with a distinctively nationalistic visual identity.
The film is celebrated for its unique artistic direction, which utilizes the soft lines and delicate color palettes characteristic of Dunhuang frescoes. The animation team, led by directors Qian Yunda and Dai Tielang, meticulously translated the ancient paintings into fluid motion, creating a work that was widely praised for its cultural authenticity. It remains a foundational piece of Chinese folklore animation, noted for its rhythmic storytelling and enduring visual grace.
