Where it came from
Yamato Takeru: After War was released in 1995 as a four-episode original video animation series produced by Nippon Animation. It serves as a loose, futuristic science-fiction reimagining of the legend of Yamato Takeru, a semi-legendary prince of ancient Japan. The series shifts the traditional mythological narrative into a high-concept mecha and fantasy setting, reflecting the mid-1990s trend of blending historical Japanese folklore with advanced technology and apocalyptic themes.
The character designs and visual direction were intended to modernize the traditional hero archetype for an audience accustomed to the grit and spectacle of the mid-90s anime boom. While it draws loosely on the 1994 theatrical film Orga directed by Junji Nishimura, the OVA was designed to provide a more expansive, serialized narrative. It remains a niche entry in the studio's catalog, often cited by collectors of 90s animation for its distinct aesthetic that bridges classical myth with the stylized mecha aesthetic prevalent during that era.
