Yasashii Lion

Yasashii Lion, or The Kindhearted Lion, was produced by Osamu Tezuka’s Mushi Production in 1970 as a short animated film. Based on the 1968 children’s book written and illustrated by Yanase Takashi—who would later become famous for creating Anpanman—the project served as a poignant exploration of empathy and non-conformity. It was released during a period when Mushi Production was experimenting with narrative styles that diverged from the high-energy action of their earlier television successes, focusing instead on softer, moralistic storytelling.

The film’s design reflects the distinct, minimalist aesthetic of Yanase’s original illustrations, which Tezuka’s team adapted with a deliberate emphasis on fluid, gentle movement. By framing the story of a lion raised by a human mother within the visual language of a fable, the creators intended to challenge traditional perceptions of nature and nurturing. While it remains a niche entry in the extensive Mushi library, it is frequently cited by animation scholars for its role in bridging the gap between Japanese picture-book illustration and the artistic sensibilities of mid-century anime.
