Where it came from
Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master is a 2024 animated television series produced by Studio Pierrot and broadcast by NHK. The series is based on the acclaimed light novel fantasy cycle written by Chisato Abe, which began publication in 2012. Set in the mystical world of Yamauchi, the narrative functions as a complex political drama centered on the court of the young prince of the Yatagarasu, a race of shape-shifting crows who govern a distinct realm.
The adaptation was directed by Yoshiaki Kyogoku, who sought to capture the series' intricate blend of historical court intrigue and high-fantasy aesthetic. The production was widely noted for its ambitious world-building and character-driven focus, moving away from conventional action tropes to emphasize the psychological stakes of its ensemble cast. Upon its release, it received positive critical attention for its atmospheric direction and faithful translation of Abe's nuanced world to the screen.
