Where it came from
Yawaraka Sangokushi Tsukisase!! Ryofuko-chan was produced in 2008 as a comedic, lighthearted adaptation of the classic Chinese historical epic, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Released by Starchild Records as an original video animation, the series reimagined iconic historical figures as deformed, chibi-style characters to subvert the gravity of the source material. This stylistic choice aimed to emphasize slapstick humor and irreverence, shifting away from the traditional depictions of martial prowess and political intrigue common in adaptations of the period.
The character designs were intentionally simplified to reflect the satirical nature of the series, drawing inspiration from contemporary gag manga trends that prioritize expressive, exaggerated features over realistic anatomical proportions. By focusing on the juxtaposition of historical prestige and absurd, modern social scenarios, the production team successfully carved out a niche within the 2000s anime landscape, catering to an audience that favored parody over historical accuracy.
