YAWARA! Sore Yuke Koshinuke Kids!!

Yawara! Sore Yuke Koshinuke Kids!! was released in 1992 as the second feature-length film adaptation of Naoki Urasawa’s celebrated manga series. Produced by Madhouse under the direction of Hiroko Tokita, the film emerged during the height of the series' popularity, following the success of both the original print run and the long-running television anime adaptation. The story follows the protagonist, Yawara Inokuma, as she balances her intense training for the Barcelona Olympics with the comedic pressures of her personal life and expectations placed upon her by her grandfather.

The film’s design reflects the transition period of 1990s cel animation, maintaining the distinct, rounded character aesthetic established by Urasawa while adapting it for the cinematic format. By focusing on the playful, lighthearted elements of the source material, the production aimed to broaden the appeal of the sports drama genre, which was often dominated by more serious or gritty narratives. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of the franchise as a charming extension of the established anime timeline, effectively capturing the spirit of the original manga’s blend of judo action and romantic comedy.
