Yellow

Yellow is a 1996 short film directed by Nick Cassavetes, notable for its intimate, character-driven narrative. Developed during a transitional period for independent cinema in the mid-nineties, the project was designed as a deeply personal exploration of familial tension and the burdens of past trauma. Cassavetes aimed for a raw, naturalistic aesthetic, stripping away cinematic artifice to focus entirely on the emotional resonance of the performances.

The film is particularly significant for featuring Gena Rowlands, Cassavetes' mother, who delivers a poignant performance alongside her son. The production was widely praised for its quiet intensity and its departure from the high-concept trends of the era, establishing a tone that would influence Cassavetes' subsequent feature film work. Critics noted the project's success in capturing domestic fragility, cementing its reputation as a respected piece of intimate storytelling.
