Where it came from
Yichang Shengwu Jianwen Lu, also known as Journal of the Mysterious Creatures, was produced by Bilibili and adapted from the popular web novel by Yuan Tong. Released as an ONA in 2019, the series was designed to translate the expansive, urban-fantasy world of the original literature into a vibrant animated format, reflecting the growing trend of Chinese studios leveraging established online fiction to anchor their streaming catalogs.
The animation reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of modern Chinese studio production, focusing on the character-driven narrative of a landlord who manages a residence for supernatural beings. The creative direction aimed for a balance between lighthearted comedy and intricate world-building, and while the series received moderate praise for its faithfulness to the source material, it remains a notable example of the mid-2010s push by platforms like Bilibili to develop original domestic animation IPs.
