Yomiuri Shimbun

The Yomiuri Shimbun traces its origins to 1874, established as a newspaper intended to be accessible to the general public, including those with limited literacy. Its name, which literally translates to 'selling by reading aloud,' reflects the early practice of street vendors calling out headlines to attract readers. Over the decades, it evolved into one of Japan's most widely circulated daily publications, eventually becoming a pillar of the Japanese media landscape by maintaining a balance between rigorous political reporting and expansive coverage of cultural topics.

The publication is famously associated with the development of modern Japanese journalism and its long-standing influence on the country's social fabric. Its design and editorial direction have shifted alongside the nation's modernization, moving from a literary-focused broadsheet to a comprehensive news enterprise. The paper gained particular international recognition for its long-term stewardship of the Yomiuri Giants baseball team, a connection that cemented its role as a central cultural institution in post-war Japan rather than merely a source of news.
