Where it came from
Yona of the Dawn, known in Japan as Akatsuki no Yona, premiered in 2014 as an adaptation of the ongoing shoujo manga series by Mizuho Kusanagi. Produced by Studio Pierrot, the 24-episode television series chronicles the journey of Princess Yona, who is forced to flee her kingdom following a palace coup. The anime was developed during a period where fantasy-adventure themes were prominent in the shoujo genre, aiming to balance character-driven drama with epic world-building and political intrigue.
The visual direction and character designs were crafted to capture Kusanagi's distinct art style, emphasizing Yona's physical and emotional transformation from a sheltered royal to a resilient leader. While the series was praised for its faithful tone and character development, it was originally received as a standalone production that left much of the sprawling manga narrative unfinished. Over time, it has garnered a dedicated international following, frequently cited by fans for its focus on self-reliance and the complex relationships within the protagonist's growing ensemble of protectors.
