Youkai Watch: Shadow Side

Youkai Watch: Shadow Side was produced by OLM, Inc. and released in 2018 as a significant narrative departure from the original Youkai Watch series. Set thirty years after the events of the original story, the series adopts a darker, more mature tone, transitioning from a lighthearted comedy-adventure to a supernatural mystery focused on the 'Shadowside' forms of various yokai. This creative shift was intended to evolve with the aging demographic of the franchise’s initial fanbase, introducing new human protagonists like Natsume Amano who navigate a more ominous version of their world.

The aesthetic direction for the series reflects this tonal shift, utilizing a grittier character design and a more atmospheric color palette compared to the brightly colored, whimsical visuals of the preceding entries. Under the production guidance of OLM, the show moved away from traditional monster-of-the-week tropes toward more serialized storytelling, emphasizing folklore-inspired horror elements. While it received praise from critics for its bold experimentation and narrative depth, the transition polarized some younger fans accustomed to the original series' comedic rhythm, leading to a unique status as a cult-favorite sub-series within the larger Youkai Watch intellectual property.
