Where it came from
Released in 2016, Youkai Watch: Soratobu Kujira to Double Sekai no Daibouken da Nyan! serves as the third feature-length film in the Youkai Watch franchise. Produced by studio OLM, the project was created to capitalize on the massive cross-media success of the property at the height of its popularity in Japan. The title translates to 'The Flying Whale and the Grand Adventure of the Two Worlds, Meow!', reflecting a narrative that experiments with shifting between traditional 2D animation and live-action cinematography.
The film was directed by Shigeharu Takahashi and Shinji Ushiro, who aimed to blend the signature whimsical spirit of the series with a surreal visual transition. The production design was intentionally fragmented, utilizing 3D CGI-heavy animation to differentiate the 'Youkai world' from the live-action sequences. It was received as a creative, albeit ambitious, departure from the television series' established format, finding a receptive audience among younger fans who enjoyed the meta-commentary on the franchise's own medium.
