Where it came from
You're Being Summoned, Azazel, known in Japan as Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san, debuted as an anime television series in 2011, produced by the acclaimed studio Production I.G. The series is based on the manga by Yasuhisa Kubo, which began serialization in 2007. The narrative centers on a detective agency specializing in occult phenomena, where the protagonist, Rinko Sakuma, finds herself acting as an assistant to a detective who summons various demons to resolve cases.
The series is celebrated for its distinctive brand of dark, absurdist humor, which contrasts sharply with the typical aesthetic of supernatural anime. Directed by Tsutomu Mizushima, the animation leans into a grotesque yet comedic style that serves the manga's cynical tone. It was received as a subversive entry in the comedy genre, praised for its willingness to abandon traditional protagonist tropes in favor of chaotic and often morally ambiguous character dynamics.
