Zongyou Yaoguai Xiang Hai Zhen

Zongyou Yaoguai Xiang Hai Zhen, often titled 'Monster in the Forbidden City' in English, is a notable entry in the Chinese original net animation (ONA) landscape. Produced to bridge cultural heritage with modern storytelling, it was developed by Tencent Penguin Pictures and originated from a broader initiative to modernize traditional folklore through high-quality 3D animation. The series reflects a growing trend in the late 2010s where major Chinese digital platforms sought to capitalize on domestic intellectual properties, targeting a demographic that values both fantasy adventure and national history.

The visual direction focuses on a blend of traditional aesthetic sensibilities with contemporary character design standards, aimed at appealing to younger digital audiences. The production prioritized fluid action sequences and a distinct color palette to differentiate itself from global competitors. Upon its release, the series was received as a competent example of modern Chinese animation, garnering praise for its ambitious world-building and its effort to repackage classic mythological creatures for a contemporary streaming audience.
