Abd al Kuri Sparrow

The Abd al Kuri sparrow, Passer hemileucus, is a distinct species endemic to the small, remote island of Abd al Kuri in the Socotra archipelago of Yemen. It was first described in the late 19th century by the zoologist W.R. Ogilvie-Grant. The bird is evolutionarily significant for its isolation, having diverged from mainland relatives to adapt to the arid, rocky terrain of its limited habitat. Its morphological features, including its characteristic rounded wing shape and notched tail, are specialized traits that reflect its survival in a harsh, windswept environment.

The scientific study and recognition of this sparrow were driven by the growing interest in the unique biodiversity of the Socotra islands during the Victorian era. Researchers were captivated by the island's high rate of endemism, which serves as a natural laboratory for evolutionary processes.
