Anna's Hummingbird

Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna) is a species native to the west coast of North America, named in the 19th century after Anna Masséna, Duchess of Rivoli, the wife of a French amateur ornithologist. Historically, the species was limited to lower California and northern Baja, but it significantly expanded its range northward during the 20th century, a shift largely attributed to the widespread planting of non-native ornamental flowers and the increasing popularity of backyard nectar feeders.

The species is distinguished by its pointed wing shape and slightly forked tail, which facilitate the high-speed, agile flight maneuvers required for its elaborate courtship displays. Biologists and ornithologists note that the male's iridescent rose-pink crown and throat are structural colorations created by light refraction through specialized feather platelets, a design evolution that serves both as a territorial warning and a vital component of its complex mating rituals.
