Banggai Crow

The Banggai Crow, Corvus unicolor, is a critically endangered member of the Corvidae family endemic to the Banggai Islands of Indonesia. Historically known from only a few specimens collected in the early 20th century, the species was considered potentially extinct for decades until its rediscovery in the early 21st century. It is primarily defined by its relatively small size compared to other crows, featuring a distinctive broad wing shape and a subtle, pointed tail that differentiates its silhouette from more common regional corvids.

The species serves as a significant subject of study for ornithologists focusing on island biogeography and the extreme vulnerability of localized avian populations. Its evolutionary background suggests a long period of isolation, which has resulted in specialized physical adaptations suited to the dense forest environments of the Peleng region. Because of its extreme rarity and the difficulty in distinguishing it from the common Large-billed Crow in the field, scientific understanding of the Banggai Crow remains rooted in a small number of historical specimens and highly specific observational records.
