Baudo Guan

The Baudo Guan, or Penelope ortoni, is an endemic cracid bird restricted to the humid forests of the Chocó region in Colombia and northern Ecuador. Its existence as a distinct, threatened species was highlighted through the efforts of ornithological surveys aimed at understanding the complex biodiversity of the western Andean slopes. The bird is characterized by its rounded wing and tail shapes, features that facilitate its maneuverability within the dense, multi-layered canopy of its primary forest habitat.

The taxonomy of the Baudo Guan is rooted in mid-twentieth-century classification efforts that sought to categorize the diverse cracid populations of South America. It was named in honor of the biologist and explorer Bayard Dominick, though it is synonymous with the geographic Baudo region where it is primarily observed.
