Bearded Bellbird

The Bearded Bellbird, or Procnias averano, is a member of the Cotingidae family native to the tropical forests of South America, particularly within the Guianas, Brazil, and Venezuela. Its history is inextricably linked to the natural biodiversity of the Neotropics, where it has evolved distinct physical characteristics—including its rounded wings and short, stout tail—that allow it to navigate dense canopy environments. The bird was first formally described by scientists during the era of early European biological exploration in the 18th and 19th centuries, documented for its remarkable and piercing vocalizations which can reach extreme decibel levels.

The design of the bird's unique physical features reflects an evolutionary specialization for a frugivorous lifestyle. The 'beard' from which it derives its common name consists of black, wattle-like caruncles dangling from the throat of the male, which are used primarily in complex courtship displays.
