Fiery-throated Fruiteater

The Fiery-throated Fruiteater, known scientifically as Pipreola chlorolepidota, inhabits the humid montane forests of the Andean slopes in Ecuador and Peru. As a member of the Cotingidae family, its evolutionary history is defined by specialization in frugivorous diets, which has influenced its relatively robust, compact build. Taxonomically, the species was first described in the mid-19th century, a period marked by intense European ornithological exploration of the Neotropics, aimed at cataloging the immense avian diversity of the South American cloud forests.

The bird's morphology is highly adapted to its forest habitat, featuring broad, rounded wings that provide the maneuverability required for foraging within dense canopy vegetation. The iconic fiery coloration of the throat—which gives the species its common name—is a result of complex feather pigmentation used in signaling within the dark, dappled light of its environment.
