Black-headed Tanager

The Black-headed Tanager, or Stilpnia cyanoptera, is native to the northern reaches of South America, primarily inhabiting the subtropical and tropical moist montane forests of Venezuela, Guyana, and parts of northern Brazil. As a member of the Thraupidae family, its taxonomy has seen revisions over the years, formerly categorized under the genus Tangara before molecular studies suggested its current placement. It was formally described by the German naturalist Swainson in 1834, reflecting the period's intense interest in cataloging the vast biodiversity of the Neotropics.

The species is distinguished by its rounded wing and tail shapes, which are characteristic of its short-distance, maneuverable flight patterns through dense forest understories.
