Blue-billed Curassow

The Blue-billed Curassow, Crax alberti, is a cracid bird endemic to the humid forests of northern Colombia. Taxonomically described in 1850 by Louis Fraser, the species was historically found across the lower Magdalena and Sinú river valleys. Its distinct physical characteristics, including the broad, rounded wings and a characteristically rounded tail, are evolutionary adaptations for navigating dense understory habitats while remaining relatively elusive.

The survival of this species is tied to its fragile environmental context, as it has suffered significantly from severe habitat fragmentation and hunting pressures since the mid-20th century. Conservation efforts, largely spearheaded by groups like the American Bird Conservancy and local Colombian organizations, focus on the protection of the remaining lowland tropical forests. The species remains highly valued by ornithologists for its status as a flagship representative of the threatened biodiversity within the Caribbean region of South America.
