White-winged Guan

The White-winged Guan was first described by Władysław Taczanowski in 1877 based on specimens found in the Tumbes region of Peru. For nearly a century, the species was believed to be extinct in the wild until its dramatic rediscovery in 1977 by ornithologist John P. O'Neill and a team of local conservationists. This event became a landmark moment in South American ornithology, highlighting the fragility of the dry forest ecosystems where this bird resides.

Physically, the species is distinguished by its namesake white primary feathers, which contrast sharply against its dark plumage. Its design—characterized by broad wings and a rounded tail—is an evolutionary adaptation for maneuvering through the dense, thorny scrubland of its native habitat. Because of its extreme rarity and limited geographic range, the White-winged Guan has become a primary symbol of conservation efforts in northwestern Peru, managed through captive breeding and habitat protection programs.
