Broad-billed Flycatcher

The Broad-billed Flycatcher (Myiagra ruficollis) was first formally described by French naturalist Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot in 1818. It belongs to the Monarchidae family, a group of passerine birds native to the Australasian region. Its evolutionary trajectory is characterized by its adaptation to the mangroves and coastal forests of northern Australia and parts of Indonesia, where its distinctive physical traits allow it to thrive in dense, humid environments.

The bird is taxonomically defined by its namesake broad, flattened bill, which is a specialized tool for hawking insects mid-flight. Its plumage and notched tail shape are consistent with the Myiagra genus, reflecting a successful evolutionary design for maneuverability within canopy gaps.
