Dillon Ripley in 1959, based on specimens collected during the Yale Peabody Museum's expedition to the region. The species is restricted to lowland forest habitats, where its presence is a significant indicator of the island's unique evolutionary isolation.
Physically, the monarch is distinguished by its largely black plumage contrasted with a white belly and a white patch on the wings.
