Buff-faced Pygmy-Parrot

The Buff-faced Pygmy-Parrot, Micropsitta pusio, is the smallest member of the parrot family, indigenous to the lowland forests of New Guinea and nearby islands. Its diminutive stature—measuring roughly three inches in length—evolved as a specialized adaptation for foraging within the complex micro-habitats of mossy tree trunks. Unlike larger psittacines that utilize their beaks primarily for fruit consumption, this species has developed a unique reliance on fungi and lichens found on bark, a dietary niche that dictates its localized distribution and social structure.
