Buffy Fish-Owl

The Buffy Fish-Owl, or Ketupa ketupu, is an enigmatic raptor native to the riparian forests of Southeast Asia. Its evolution favored specialized physiological traits, most notably broad wings and a rounded tail, which allow for maneuverability in dense riverine environments. Unlike most owls, its plumage is not entirely waterproof, yet it remains perfectly adapted for low-altitude flight above water surfaces where it hunts primarily for fish and aquatic crustaceans.

First described scientifically in the 19th century, the species reflects the diverse biodiversity of the Sundaic region. Ornithological studies have long focused on its unique behavioral adaptations, such as its preference for forest streams and its reliance on acute auditory perception to detect movement near the water line. The bird is recognized for its distinctive ear tufts and striking yellow eyes, features that have long fascinated naturalists documenting the ecological tapestry of the Malay Peninsula and surrounding islands.
