Where it came from
Koepcke's Screech-Owl was formally described by ornithologist John Patton O'Neill and Gary R. Graves in 1977. It is endemic to the humid montane forests of the eastern Andean slopes in central Peru. The species was named in honor of Maria Koepcke, a prominent German-Peruvian ornithologist who made significant contributions to the understanding of Andean bird life before her tragic death in 1971.
The species is distinguished by its rounded wings and rounded tail, which are typical adaptations for maneuvering through dense forest undergrowth. Its plumage provides effective camouflage against bark, reflecting an evolutionary response to its nocturnal lifestyle.
