Carmiol's Tanager

Carmiol's Tanager, formally described as Chlorothraupis carmioli, was first cataloged in the late 19th century and named in honor of Julian Carmiol, a German naturalist who collected extensively in Costa Rica. It belongs to the family Cardinalidae, representing a group of Neotropical birds that occupy the dense understory of humid forests. The identification of this species was part of a broader scientific effort to map the avian biodiversity of Central America during a period of intense exploration by European and American ornithologists.

The bird is characterized by its distinct, somewhat drab olive-green plumage, which serves as an effective adaptation for camouflage within the dimly lit forest floor. Its physical anatomy, specifically the rounded wing and tail shapes, reflects an evolutionary trajectory optimized for maneuverability through dense vegetation rather than long-distance migratory flight. While not possessing the vibrant coloration of many of its relatives, the species is highly regarded by ornithologists for its specialized ecological niche and its consistent, if elusive, presence in the lowland and foothill forests of the region.
