Carnaby's Black-Cockatoo

Carnaby's Black-Cockatoo, scientifically known as Zanda latirostris, is a large, endemic species native to the southwestern regions of Western Australia. The species was formally described and distinguished from the closely related Baudin's Black-Cockatoo in the mid-20th century, specifically named after the naturalist Ivan Carnaby who first identified the subtle physiological differences between the two populations. Evolutionarily, the bird adapted to the unique scrubland and woodland habitats of its range, developing a characteristically broad, powerful wing shape for sustained flight and a rounded tail that aids in maneuverability within dense vegetation.

The survival of this species is deeply tied to the history of land clearing in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia.
