Channel-billed Cuckoo

The Channel-billed Cuckoo, Scythrops novaehollandiae, is the world's largest brood-parasitic bird, characterized by its substantial size, broad wings, and remarkably long tail. It is primarily found across northern and eastern Australia, New Guinea, and parts of Indonesia. Unlike many other cuckoos, it does not build its own nests but instead lays its eggs in the nests of other large birds, most notably magpies, currawongs, and crows. This evolutionary strategy ensures the survival of its young, which often hatch and outcompete the host's own offspring for food.

The species is distinctive for its massive, curved bill, which serves as a specialized tool for foraging among tree canopies, particularly for fruits such as figs. Ornithological interest in the bird often focuses on its migratory patterns and its complex relationship with host species.
