Long-tailed Koel

The Long-tailed Koel, or Urodynamis taitensis, is a migratory cuckoo native to the Pacific islands, most notably New Zealand, where it is known as the koekoeā. Evolutionary biology indicates that this species developed its distinct broad wings and elongated tail as adaptations for long-distance oceanic migration, traveling thousands of kilometers to winter in the tropical Pacific. Unlike sedentary birds, its morphology is the result of specialized selective pressures that favor endurance and aerodynamic efficiency during its arduous seasonal transits.

The taxonomy of the species was first formally described by scientists in the late 18th century during the era of Pacific exploration. Ornithologists have long studied the bird for its unique parasitic nesting behavior, wherein it lays its eggs in the nests of other species.
