Moluccan Drongo-Cuckoo

The Moluccan Drongo-Cuckoo, Surniculus musschenbroeki, is a species native to the Indonesian islands of the Moluccas. It belongs to the Cuculidae family, a group of birds known for their distinct brood parasitic behavior. Taxonomically, it was historically grouped with the Square-tailed Drongo-Cuckoo but has since been recognized as a distinct species based on vocalization patterns and minor morphological differences, specifically its long, graduated tail and pointed wing structure.

The bird serves as a classic example of avian mimicry. Its plumage and long tail are evolved to resemble the drongos found in its habitat, a defense mechanism known as Batesian mimicry. By appearing as a drongo—an aggressive, insectivorous bird—the cuckoo avoids predation and gains easier access to the nests of its unsuspecting hosts. Ornithological documentation of the species has been primarily conducted by field researchers studying the biodiversity of Wallacea, emphasizing its ecological role within the specialized forest environments of the Indonesian archipelago.
