Chatham Islands Parakeet

The Chatham Islands parakeet, known scientifically as Cyanoramphus forbesi, is a taonga species endemic to the Mangere and Little Mangere islands of the Chatham archipelago. It evolved in isolation from the mainland New Zealand kākāriki, developing unique morphological traits such as its distinctively rounded wings and pointed tail, which are adaptations to the specific wind patterns and dense scrub habitats of its rugged island home.

This parakeet was first described by science in the late 19th century, a period when many Chatham Islands species were facing extreme pressure from introduced predators and habitat loss. The bird became a focal point for conservation efforts in the 20th century, as it was pushed to the brink of extinction. Its survival is widely considered a success story of intensive wildlife management, highlighting the delicate ecological balance of isolated island ecosystems.
