Chatham Islands Pigeon

The Chatham Islands pigeon, or parea, is a large endemic species of wood pigeon restricted to the Chatham Islands of New Zealand. Diverging from its mainland relative, the New Zealand pigeon, around 500,000 years ago, it evolved in isolation to adapt to the specific forest ecosystems of the archipelago. It is structurally distinguished by its heavier build, rounded wing and tail shapes, and a lack of the iridescent sheen typically found on the plumage of its mainland counterpart.

This species was historically pushed to the brink of extinction due to habitat loss, predation by introduced mammals, and human hunting. Following extensive conservation efforts initiated in the late 20th century—including intensive predator control and forest restoration—the population has shown a gradual recovery. The parea serves as a vital ecological indicator for the health of the islands' temperate rainforests and remains a focus of ongoing ornithological research regarding island biogeography and evolutionary divergence.
