Madarasz's Tiger-Parrot

The Madarasz's Tiger-Parrot, Psittacella madaraszi, was first described by the German ornithologist Adolf Bernhard Meyer in 1886. It is a member of the genus Psittacella, a group of small, distinctive parrots native to the montane forests of New Guinea. The species was named in honor of the Hungarian ornithologist Gyula Madarász, a contemporary of Meyer who made significant contributions to the taxonomy of the region's avian life during the late 19th century.

Taxonomically, the species is defined by its compact, rounded wings and its characteristic pointed tail, features that reflect its adaptation to the dense, high-altitude undergrowth of its habitat. Like others in its genus, it is known for its cryptic coloration, which provides camouflage against the mossy, shadowed branches of the New Guinea highlands.
