Chatham Islands Snipe

The Chatham Islands snipe, scientifically known as Coenocorypha pusilla, is a small, cryptic shorebird endemic to the Chatham Islands of New Zealand. Unlike its more migratory relatives, this species evolved in relative isolation, leading to specialized adaptations such as broad wings and a rounded tail shape that favor short, explosive bursts of flight over long-distance travel. The species was historically widespread across the archipelago but suffered severe population declines following the arrival of mammalian predators, eventually becoming restricted to predator-free offshore islands like Rangatira and Mangere.

The survival of the species is considered a landmark achievement in avian conservation biology. Due to intense recovery efforts involving habitat restoration and the successful eradication of invasive species, the population has shown remarkable resilience. The bird is now recognized as a key indicator of the health of sub-Antarctic island ecosystems, with ornithologists and naturalists valuing it as a rare example of an evolutionary lineage that has persisted despite extreme environmental pressure.
