Chestnut-necklaced Partridge

The Chestnut-necklaced Partridge, Tropicoperdix charltonii, is a member of the Phasianidae family native to the lowland forests of Southeast Asia, including parts of Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. It was first described by the naturalist Thomas Campbell Eyton in 1845, named in honor of H.L. Charlton. This species occupies a specialized ecological niche in dense forest undergrowth, which has historically made it a difficult bird to document, let alone study, in the wild.

The bird is characterized by its distinctive chestnut-colored plumage on the throat and neck, coupled with a rounded wing shape and a notably short tail, features that have evolved to suit its sedentary life on the forest floor. The species has historically faced significant challenges due to habitat loss from deforestation and palm oil expansion, leading to its classification as a vulnerable or endangered species depending on the specific region. Ornithological documentation of the bird remains limited, reflecting its elusive nature and the increasing fragility of its native forest environments.
