Greater Prairie-Chicken

The greater prairie-chicken, Tympanuchus cupido, evolved as a distinct species within the North American grasslands, primarily inhabiting the tallgrass and mixed-grass prairies of the central United States. Historically, these birds were a defining component of the prairie ecosystem, serving as a primary indicator of habitat health. Their existence became deeply intertwined with the expansion of agricultural frontiers in the 19th and early 20th centuries, as the widespread conversion of native grasslands into farmland led to significant population declines.

The species is celebrated in natural history for the complex courtship rituals of the males, known as booming. These performances, characterized by the inflation of bright orange neck sacs and rhythmic stamping, were extensively documented by naturalists and wildlife illustrators in the late 19th century, such as John James Audubon. His depictions sought to capture the bird's distinctive broad wings and pointed tail in the context of the vast, open landscapes they required for survival, helping to draw scientific and public attention to the necessity of prairie conservation.
