Bulwer's Pheasant

Bulwer's pheasant, named after Sir Henry Bulwer, was first formally described by the ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1874. Native to the interior rainforests of Borneo, this species was identified during a period of intense European biological exploration in Southeast Asia. Its distinct morphology, particularly the male's stark white, elongated tail feathers and crimson facial skin, quickly marked it as a prized specimen for natural history museums and private collections across Victorian Britain.

The bird’s design—characterized by its rounded wings and dramatic, sweeping tail—serves as an evolutionary adaptation for life in the dense, shaded understory of montane forests. Taxonomically placed within the Phasianidae family, the species reflects the specialized evolution of the genus Lophura. While its aesthetic features made it a subject of fascination among 19th-century naturalists, it has since become a significant focal point for modern conservationists concerned with the habitat fragmentation occurring throughout its limited range in Borneo.
