Crowned Woodnymph

The Crowned Woodnymph, or Thalurania colombica, is a species of hummingbird native to the humid forests of Central and South America. Historically cataloged during the nineteenth-century surge in tropical ornithological exploration, the species was first formally described by the French naturalist Jules Bourcier in 1843. It belongs to the broader Trochilidae family, a group that became a primary focus for Western collectors and scientific illustrators during the Victorian era due to the iridescent, metallic plumage that characterizes the woodnymph genus.

The physical characteristics of the Crowned Woodnymph, particularly its pointed wing shape and distinctive notched tail, are evolutionary adaptations for precise, rapid maneuverability within dense forest understories.
