Wine-throated Hummingbird

The Wine-throated Hummingbird (Selasphorus ellioti) is a small avian species native to the highland forests of Central America, primarily ranging from Chiapas, Mexico, through Guatemala and Honduras to El Salvador. It was formally described in 1858 by the British ornithologist John Gould, who was prolific in cataloging the hummingbird family. The species is named in honor of the American ornithologist Daniel Giraud Elliot, a prominent figure in 19th-century natural history who was known for his extensive contributions to avian classification and his support of the American Museum of Natural History.

The design and coloration of the Wine-throated Hummingbird are evolutionary adaptations to its montane environment, featuring a distinctive wine-red throat patch, or gorget, which serves as a primary identifier for males. Its morphological characteristics, including pointed wings and a slightly forked tail, are consistent with the genus Selasphorus, facilitating the rapid, maneuverable flight required for hovering near the nectar-rich flowers that form the bulk of its diet. Throughout its history of study, the bird has been recognized by naturalists for its resilience in the temperate cloud forests where it resides.
